Each calendar year triathletes who are USA Triathlon members and complete at least three triathlons in the year are given a national ranking in their age group.
Each triathlon you are given a score which is calculated by a formula that compares your times with other athletes (thus giving you a performance score that accounts for variations in course distance and difficulty etc.) Your top 3 scores count for the year so it's advantageous for your ranking to compete as much as possible so your worst performances are not counted in your average.
The top 10% of athletes that complete 3 races are awarded All-American status (AA) and they send you a nice certificate in the mail!
You can look up your ranking during the year and whether you're currently All-American but note that this status can change as more race results are added to the database and the pool of eligible athletes grows. Also note that there is often a (frustrating) delay, 6 weeks or even more, after the race is finished and the race results make it to the database. There is a further delay as it takes several days for the scored race to enter into your top 3.
